Traditional skin cloaks - their use and meaning
Kangaroo skins crafted into cloaks and clothing provided essential warmth, protection from the weather, warmth and softness for bedding. The garments were culturally significant and would often have designs burnt or cut into them that could map a person's kinship, their status and the totem identity
Possum skins
Possum skin cloaks are legendary indigenous clothing. Possum skin pelts were sewn together with kangaroo sinew to make cloaks, providing warmth and waterproofing.
They also were used as baby carriers and were given as their first bed and wrap. As they grew older, more pelts were added to the cloak tell stories of their life journey and family. Traditionally at the end of their life they were wrapped and buried in their cloak taking it's life full circle and signifying the connection to identity and Country.
