With more than 40 years' experience working in schools and sharing Indigenous culture, I understand how valuable it is for students to learn through real material, practical skills and hands-on experience. 

The educational environment is changing, and increasingly teachers and Elders are being asked to teach Indigenous culture themselves. But where do you find the resources?

It’s one thing to talk about traditional skills — it’s another to actually demonstrate them.

Many schools simply don’t have access to the physical materials needed: stone tool-making materials, ochre, emu feathers, beeswax, bark for string-making and much more. And, through no fault of their own, teachers and Elders may not have had the opportunity to learn how these age-old skills were traditionally demonstrated.

I have brought these materials together in a large 55-litre storage container on wheels, specially designed to be practical, durable and easy to use.

Inside, you’ll find a comprehensive collection of authentic Indigenous materials, carefully organised into their own compartments, along with:

The pack is full — there is a lot to explore and a lot to use.

Over 200 Resources Packs have now been purchased by schools across Australia, and I am very proud that the pack has been so warmly received by educators and Elders.

The Resources Pack isn't intended to sit on a shelf. It is made to be used.

The materials are designed to last for years before they need replacing. Some, such as the stone tools, can last indefinitely.

And when materials eventually need replenishing, that's no problem. I can supply authentic materials to refurbish and update the pack.

There is also a bigger purpose behind the Resources Pack.

Once teachers and students become familiar with these materials, they can begin to recognise and collect suitable local materials themselves. The aim is to encourage people to become familiar with the Indigenous materials of their own area and understand how they can be used.

In that way, the pack becomes more than a collection of resources — it becomes a starting point for ongoing local learning.
